Finding Your Home Biz Niche

by Mary Emma Allen on May 5th, 2009

“What’s your brand? Your niche?” I recently was asked.

I sometimes spread myself into many projects, all involved in earning a living, but still somewhat related. For instance, I’m a freelance writer, blogger, substitute teacher, speaker and workshop teacher.

Do these tie together? Yes, in the way they all relate to writing or my writing topics. However, not all are connected to one niche.

Should I have a niche?

Generally I’ve adhered to the old adage, “Don’t put your eggs all in one basket.”

Then when the economy changes, people’s interests change, fads change, or technology decrees some areas obsolete, I won’t be caught short. However, because I have spread myself out, perhaps I haven’t become known as a ultimate expert in any one field, except as a published writer.

However, this has kept my life interesting and had challenged me to learn new skills, technology, and meet and help many people.

What’s your “take” on this? How have you arranged your life and home business?
