Dorothy Thompson - Home Business E-marketing Specialist - Part 2

by Mary Emma Allen on May 2nd, 2007

In the previous post, Part 1, I discussed with Dorothy how she changed her focus from writer to e-marketing specialist to develop this type of home business, Pump Up Your Book Promotion Virtual Book Tours.  Today, we’ll continue the discussion and learn the advice Dorothy has for those interested in becoming a home business owner.

As Dorothy said, she’s still a writer, but she’s learned to change with the times and focus her expertise on areas that are in demand and will help others.

MEA: How does one decide when to make changes in focus?

Dorothy: I think that when you land on something that works, it’s time to really put your priorities in order.  If there’s something you can do and do well, listen to your own instincts.  Some people close their eyes to things because they fear the unknown.  Some people have talent but sometimes it takes hitting them on the head with a shovel before they come to their senses and realize that the answer is right there in front of them.

I’m still writing, but I know that promoting is what I love to do.  I’ve been down the author path.  Now let’s see how things go from the other side of the fence.

People just need to think about what makes them happy.  There’s a saying that goes, “Work at something you love and you’ll never have to work another day in your life again.”  I think I can finally say I have found something I truly love doing and it’s actually fun.

MEA:  What advice can you give anyone in a home business?

Dorothy:  I think remembering to stay organized is very important.  Finding a home business that you are comfortable with and you can have fun with are very important, too.

I think running a home business is going to be the wave of the future now, if it isn’t already, because people are realizing that it takes more than one or two paychecks (if they’re married) to bring in a decent income anymore.

And I believe women are making up a huge part of that home business force.  Even if they have jobs outside the home, thay are looking for ideas on making that added income by finding something they love to do that will make money.

If you can find something that no one else is selling, or if you can find something that someone else is selling, but your prices are better without sacrificing quality, you have hit on a home bjusiness gold mine.

MEA:  You mention you’re still writing.  Do you have some projects in the works?

Dorothy:  As a matter of fact, a book that Heide Kaminski, Pam Lawniczak and I wrote together over the Internet called, The Search for the Million $$$Ghost is out in e-book and print formats.  I’m also having another relationship book, The Soul Mate Triangle: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Soul Mate Relationship, come out, probably next year, by Zumaya Publications.

I just with there were more minutes in a day.  What with the promotions going on, and the virtual book tours, it’s hard.  But I do love writing and will never stop, I suppose.

Dorothy has been generous with her information about establishing a home business.  I hope you’re inspired and will utilize some of her ideas and enthusiasm in yours.

    Mary Emma & Dorothy

Thanks for this interesting series and an innovative approach to book promotion and home business.

I’d never heard of a virtual book tour before, but it makes perfect sense.

Thanks, Yvonne, for visiting and leaving a comment. Yes, virtual book tours are becoming very popular, and, according to authors who participate, very productive. You might want to consider being a host on your Grow Your Writing Business blog. I’m sure there are authors who would enjoy being hosted “on the other side of the world” (from the US)!
