Sales Tax & the Home Business Owner

Whether one collects sales tax for mail order and Internet sales often presents a quandry for the home business owner.

*What if you live in a no tax state but sell to customers in a state where there is a sales tax?

*What if you have a sales tax in your state and sell to someone in another sales tax state?

*What happens when you and your customer both live in the same state that has a sales tax?

*Do you collect sales tax if you visit another state to teach a workshop or give presentations and sell items while there?

These and other scenarios raise questions.

So….visit Kelly, the Taxgirl.  She has a great post about this topic, Ask the Taxgirl: Internet Sales.  Here Kelly will answer some of the questions you may have about the sales tax issue.

When Home Business Owners Give Employees Gifts…

Kelly, at Taxgirl, brought up an interesting point in her post, iPhone,uTax, concerning gifts from businesses to employees.  She connected this information with Apple giving it’s employees free iPhones.  However, those phones aren’t completely free come tax time.  They’re considered compensation, and as such, should show up on the employees’ W-2’s.

If you have employees in your home business, and you give them gifts, you’ll want to read Kelly’s post, and if necessary, get additional information to see the specific details.

7 Random Facts About Home Biz Notes & Mary Emma

I’ve been tagged by Kelly, at Taxgirl, in this 7 Random Facts meme.  What are 7 random facts my readers would like to know about me, possibly in relation to my Home Biz Notes blog and my background for writing it?

Here goes…………………

1.  I’ve been involved in some type of home business most of my life, even while working as a reporter for our local newspaper where I wrote a column on traditional and home businesses.  Home Biz Notes evolved out of my experiences over the years.

2.  I grew up on a dairy farm in the Hudson River Valley of New York State (USA).  We didn’t even think of farming as a home business in those days…just a way to make a living with the whole family (parents, four children and hired man) pitching in.

3.  Freelance writing has always been part of my life.  This was something I could do when we lived in various parts of the country while my husband Jim was an Air Force pilot.  I also could write with a child at home and now pursue this career in theInternet age as we travel for our consulting business.

4. My quiltmaking business developed during the Bicentennial years of 1975-76, and was another way I could work at home while our daughter was small.  This experience  has enabled me to write the Patchwork and Quilting blog here at b5media.  I’ve also written a book, The Magic of Patchwork.

5. Jim and I created a publishing business to produce my books, especially the one about my mom’s journey through Alzheimer’s, When We Become the Parent to Our Parents.  This resulted in my Alzheimer’s Notes blog

6.  Jim and I have explored the United States by plane (even in a by-plane we once owned), drove a Model A Ford across the Rockies (with a 10-month old baby), hiked mountains, biked trails, and continue to find new adventures, one of which is the Internet.

7.  We live in a mult-generational home in the woods with kids, grandkids and assorted pets.  This is “the house that Jim built” and is still building after 27 years.

Now I’m to call upon 7 people to participate in the meme at their blog and let us learn 7 random facts about them:

Liz at Alzheimer’s Notes

Yvonne at Grow Your Writing Business

Kristen at Lively Women

Beth at Meandering Threads

Gray at Fame or Famine

Tris at Pimp Your Work

Katelyn at Life Without Memories

These are the instructions or rules:

Each person starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves.  People who are tagged, need then to report this on their own blog with their 7 things as well as these rules.  They then need to tag 7 others and list their names on their blog. They are also asked to leave a comment for each of the tagged, letting them know they have been tagged and to read the blog.

I’ve had fun participating in this meme.  I hope you enjoy reading it and that those tagged will have time to share their 7 Random Facts.
