10 Reasons To Meet Clients Outside Your Home Office
When I say home office, I use the term loosely to refer to your home business space.
Not everyone who runs a home based business has the luxury of a separate space as a home office Even if you do, there are still reasons you may choose to meet clients outside your home office.
- Family decision not to have clients in your home
- Don’t want clients to know where you live
- You have out of town visitors staying over
- Home is too noisy, messy etc.
- Neighbors are noisy or worse still, yell at each other.
- You don’t have a suitable, private space to meet e.g. if you work from the corner of the kitchen table
- You want to find “neutral” terrritory such as a coffee shop to make your client feel more at ease
- You don’t have to do a spring clean and put away the kids toys or your sewing etc.
- You get a break out of the house and good strong coffee at your favorite coffee shop
- You want to do something in town before or after your meeting
Any other reasons you may like to meet clients outside your home office?

This is a good topic to address, Yvonne. If we’re working strictly online and never have clients/customers inside our home, then the above reasons usually don’t apply.
However, if we have clients/customers coming to the home, we need to be aware of presenting a professional appearance and situation. At one home, when I did dressmaking and alterations, my clients had to come through our kitchen to reach my sewing room/studio. Because it was difficult to keep the sink cleared of dirty dishes all the time, my husband bought a dishwasher. Then it was everyone’s responsibility to put their dirty dishes in it…and out of sight. We just had to make sure it was empty when dishes were finished drying to make room for the new accumulation!

Yvonne- I would never have clients in my home unless it was as clean as a model. We tend to put up with lack of cleanliness in our home that we would never put up with outside it.

Thanks, Bob, for stopping by and adding your thoughts. Yes, if we work out of our home and operate a business where clients will be coming in, we need to be aware that a neat, professional appearance is necessary.

[...] client is meeting you in their lunch break, it makes sense to meet close to where they work. For a number of reasons, you may also prefer to meet outside your home [...]

Hi Bob
You make a good point. I guess we have to view it through a client’s eyes. Meeting outside the home saves this concern.
