Regarding Changes That Affect Home Businesses
In a previous post, I discussed the fact that changes, often beyond your control, can affect your home business, even putting you out of business in extreme cases. At least, the changes (in regulations, materials, location, taxes, zoning, your health, etc.) may cause you to rethink how you’re producing and conducting business.
That other post mentioned the ruling in New York City about banning trans fats in foods. Apparently some took this to mean I was objecting to this ruling. I was simply reporting it as one example that could cause a change, and referred to a news item that mentioned possible effects it could have on businesses.
As another example…I recall a change in requirements for fabrics used in children’s sleepwear that occurred when I was sewing sleepers and blankets for a shop. This caused me to look for different fabrics for producing those items. It also resulted in stores carrying these new fabrics and fewer of the former ones.
A change in a highway location, as well as construction of a highway and detour of traffic, can result in less business for a home enterprise. I know of one small restaurant that went out of business, not due to change of highway location, but lengthy bridge reconstruction nearby which resulted in different traffic flow. Because of the difficulty of getting to the restaurant, customers simply went elsewhere. This could happen to your home business, too.
When I was making children’s quilted vests, I always kept in mind that styles could change and there could be decreased interest in these items. If I’d continued that business, I would have added other items to the line so that I wasn’t depending on just one.
