What Should Home Business Owners Blog About?

by Mary Emma Allen on May 3rd, 2007

“Do you have a blog?”  business owners often are asked nowadays.  Customers expect them to have a web site, but a blog as well, or instead, if you’re not an online business.

“What should I blog about?” the business owner asks.  “I’m not a writer!”

(Writers have discovered the need to blog to promote their work and are among some of the most avid bloggers…whether they’re blogging about writing or some other topic related to their work.)

I noticed quilters and artists have picked up this trend. (My daughter has a blog, Meandering Threads, to share her world and her quilting.)

What about the person who has a shop in their home and is busy producing items or performing a service?  Many of their customers would like to know more about their work and world.  You don’t need to get extremely personal.  Simply share information about your type of business.

Here are some suggestions.  If your business isn’t mentioned here, use these ideas for brainstorming.

*House Cleaning - share cleaning tips, historic tidbits,  managing a business with family, etc.

*Dressmaking - share information about various styles, fabrics, caring for one’s clothing.

*Landscaping - information about various plants to use for your lawn, tips on maintaining a lawn, when to plant and where, examples of fantastic lawns

*Pet Sitting - tips for pet sitters, various types of pets, funny stories about pets

*Party Planning - party tips, recipes, games for parties

*Hair sylist - hair care tips, what styles look good on various face shapes, hair styles over the years

*Skin care & make-up consultant - tips for beauty basics, make-up trends

*Catering - meal planning, party tips, types of meals, food trends

*Accounting - tax tips, business and personal bookkeeping tips

These are just  a few of the home businesses that can benefit from blogs.  Check out blogs in these areas and see what additional services (via blog information) they are providing for their customers.

You’ll find books on business blogging and on specific businesses, like the one below.

Also, Des Walsh, at Business and Blogging, recently wrote a post about Why a Business Blog? Here are 5 Good Reasons.  Des’ blog will give you consistently good advice about blogging for your business.

Love this post!! The reason I got into blogging was because I want to market my career coaching and take it to another level. I get lots of recommendations by word of mouth from various arenas. I want to begin teaching teleclasses so that my business gets expanded beyond my city and state to a more global audience. Blogging is opening that door. When working with a client, I share my blog as a follow-up resource for them to get additional information about the hiring process and interview tips. Great job!

These are great suggestions Mary Emma.

I guess there is also scope for complementary businesses who are not in competition e.g. hair care & skin care, to even develop a working relationship and do some cross promotion on their blogs, just as they would if they were around the corner and working in tandem.

I love the idea of business blogging.
